Disaster Management and Emergency Management Demonstrated Success

  • Under a FEMA contract, IEM is providing air evacuation operations ground support to help Gulf Coast and lower Atlantic states better plan and execute mass air evacuations for hurricanes and other catastrophic emergencies.
  • The value of IEM's scenario-driven planning process was illustrated during Hurricane Katrina response efforts. Concepts developed during the earlier "Hurricane Pam" catastrophic planning workshops proved useful to responders. Read more on Hurricane Pam.
  • IEM supported FEMA and the State of Florida in catastrophic hurricane planning efforts in that state.
  • IEM and FEMA are working together to develop a national transportation strategy and operational transportation plans for mass evacuations.
  • IEM provided catastrophic preparedness technical assistance to 10 high-risk major metropolitan areas through the Regional Catastrophic Preparedness Grant Program. The 10 areas are Boston, Chicago, Honolulu, Houston, Los Angeles/Long Beach, National Capital Region, New York/New Jersey, Norfolk, Seattle and Seattle/Puget Sound.
  • IEM was selected by FEMA to support the exercise-driven planning process for catastrophic earthquake preparedness in the New Madrid Seismic Zone of the Central Mississippi Valley.
  • IEM is supporting catastrophic planning in non-UASI counties in New Jersey.
  • IEM developed guidance for FEMA regarding core mitigation actions which can be used to reduce losses for both natural and terrorism hazards.
  • IEM provided technical assistance to the States of Kansas and Wisconsin, and the U.S. Virgin Islands regarding critical infrastructure vulnerability and mitigation actions.
  • IEM developed FEMA-approved all-hazard mitigation plans at the local level for communities such as Iberville Parish, LA, and Chester County, PA.
  • IEM assisted in the development of an enhanced hazard mitigation plan for the State of Louisiana.
  • IEM conducted risk analyses for all military facilities in the continental U.S. where chemical weapons are stored, and developed one of only three chemical and biological hazard assessment and tracking models approved by the Department of Defense (DoD).
