Training and Exercises Demonstrated Successes

  • DHS selected IEM to develop and launch its chemical sector Security Awareness Training, a Web-based interactive program to help increase security awareness among employees in chemical facilities across the U.S.
  • IEM developed a mass fatalities technical assistance program for DHS which provides planning and training guidance to state and local jurisdictions across the U.S. This national effort was conducted in association with the National Mass Fatalities Institute (NMFI).
  • For more than a decade IEM has provided training in mission-critical systems and response procedures for military and civilian personnel working in the 10 states and more than 40 counties associated with the Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program (CSEPP). IEM is also responsible for implementation of the nationwide CSEPP Exercise Program for testing preparedness in communities surrounding the nation's chemical weapons stockpile sites.
  • IEM’s Smarty Pantz Studios created S.M.A.R.T Warfighter, a mixed reality training system that helps warfighters learn to recognize and react to signs of potential IED threats prior to deployment. Soldiers observe and monitor a virtual marketplace street scene full of sights, sounds, and potential dangers that they may encounter in Iraq or Afghanistan. S.M.A.R.T. Warfighter is currently deployed at the Infantry Immersion Trainer (IIT) at Camp Pendleton, CA.

  • IEM developed and delivered training for chemical biological radiological nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) protection equipment, decontamination devices and detection devices for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA)-sponsored Restoration of Operations (RestOps) Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD)
  • IEM developed and coordinated the eight-day "Hurricane Pam" scenario-based planning exercise for FEMA that presented over 300 participants from all levels of government with a realistic estimate of the challenges a major hurricane strike on New Orleans would present. The exercise allowed for development of planning concepts, such as "lily pad" search and rescue operations, that saved lives in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
  • IEM developed and facilitated a regional exercise program for the State of Georgia designed around the primary goal of familiarizing the response community with a collective response and recovery strategy in a disaster event scenario.
  • For Howard County, Maryland, public schools, IEM developed and conducted a tabletop exercise to assess communications and student accountability policies and procedures after a simulated act of nuclear terrorism in Washington, D.C. IEM also conducted a similar tabletop for Howard Community College based on an incident in Baltimore.
  • On behalf of the FEMA National Preparedness Directorate, Capabilities Division (formerly part of DHS Office of Grants and Training), IEM delivered preparedness and prevention training and technical assistance workshops to state and local jurisdictions across the nation in such areas as COOP/COG planning, EOP development, and critical infrastructure mitigation.
  • IEM training includes specialized instruction associated with high-risk incidents such as nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) emergencies, hostage situations, and counterterrorism operations. We also provide managerial services that include concept development, experimentation planning, data collection planning, vendor coordination, meetings, conference briefings support, and coordination of training.
  • IEM provides training and other services for Installation Force Protection mission requirements at U.S. Army installations worldwide through our support to the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence (MSCoE) and its Chemical, Military Police, and Engineer Schools. IEM’s training and support tasks focus on the roles, missions, interactions and potential technologies to support Installation Force Protection mission requirements at U.S. Army Installations worldwide, utilizing Fort Leonard Wood, MO, as a test bed.
  • IEM personnel provided domestic preparedness training in support of the 120 Cities Program (Nunn-Lugar-Dominici Domestic Preparedness) to help state and local emergency response agencies prevent and respond to incidents involving weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).
